Score Brownie Points with Cupcakes on Boss’ Day (Oct. 16)

Posted by: on October 11, 2012

I’ve had a mixed bag of bosses over the years.

I began my work career at the age of 14 (ugh, flipping chickens).  I hated that job, hated the smell and sizzle of chicken grease, dreaded the rush of mean hungry masses, and was absolutely terrified of the boss.  Impatient, insulting, intimidating, the volume on that man’s voice had only two settings:   belittle and berate.  I was so uncomfortable in his presence that I made a point to volunteer for the menial tasks nobody else wanted to do … outside.  Like: burn boxes in the winter, pick up trash in the parking lot, squeegee bird poo off the windows (I got really, really good at windows).

Then there was the crazy artist boss. Everything about him was unpredictable. One day he came to work in suit and tie. The next day he showed up in a Captain America outfit.  One week he declared that an “open” work schedule was more conducive to creativity, the next week he attached a new time clock to the wall.  He scheduled mandatory staff meetings that he didn’t attend and more than once needed reminding to do payroll.  But we all loved him.  Because he genuinely cared for his employees and would have given any of us the shirt (or cape!) off his back.

There were those bosses who were very, very good (thank you, Jim, for sitting up with me at the hospital). And there were those who were really, pretty bad (you know who you are, enough said). Obviously, the best boss understands the important interplay of expectation and commendation (and compensation!) plus the healthy balance of work and play.  You may or may not have a boss like that.  But at the end of the day, bosses are human and most of them could probably use an extra measure of respect for the responsibility they carry. Boss’ Day is October 16th  — and honestly, it  never hurts to do something nice for the boss.

Rather than opt for the cliché coffee mug or gift certificate, why not dazzle your boss with decadent ‘cakes from Cupcake by Design in Grand Rapids.  We’re making it fun and easy to impress your boss – here’s how:  head to our Facebook page and tell us “What Makes My Boss Special.”  You could win a special cupcake just for your boss AND a dozen cupcakes for the office.  One random winner will be selected on Monday, October 15th and then we’ll deliver this sweet Bosses Day treat on October 16 (and to make you look even better to the boss, we’ll attach your submission to the order).  Don’t delay,  get in on cupcakes for boss’s day!

My boss is extremely special, he is my husband. He started our company 20 years ago, giving it is heart and soul and yet still trying to be here for me and our 2 boys. I started working as the office manager about 15 years ago. Most people say that they could NEVER work with their husband/spouse but I am truly honored and feel blessed. I am proud of how hard he works, the dedication he gives our customers, the pride he takes in the work that our employees give to all of our customers. He treats our guys who work with us like family. He is never afraid to be the one to go out and shovel the walk, empty a trash can, etc if everyone else is busy. I think he deserves to be the boss of the day because he is just simply a great guy. Plus, the guys absolutely love your cupcakes and it would be a treat for them as well.

You know you have a good boss when they recognize when you do a good job. You know you have a great boss when they let you know you didn’t as good or point out your mistakes.

That is the case with my boss. We’ve worked together for 3 years now and he is the kind of boss that will ask me for a high five when I, or both of us, accomplished something great at work. But he has been also the person who helps me learn from my mistakes always reassuring me that I have potential to do better and greater things in the future.

Sadly, he has resigned to his position to move forward on his career but I have had the honor to learn so much from him; I look up to him as a mentor and a great leader. My only wish is that he also sees me as a great person to work with, and as the daughter he never had. I will miss him so much and that is why this Boss’ Day will be special and one we’ll never forget.
